Ancestry Utils

Ancestry Utils v. 1.0

Ancestry Utils is a Greasemonkey script that customizes the way Ancestry.com, particularly Member Trees, display and behave. This script requires Firefox with the Greasemonkey add-on. I understand that Chrome and Safari offer some support for scripts like this, but I believe I've made use of features only available in Firefox.

To install:
  • Install Firefox and/or Greasemonkey
  • Come back here, using Firefox, and click the download button in the menu on the left
  • Follow the Greasemonkey prompts

Ancestry Utils Features:

  • Quickly Edit or Delete Source Citations
Notice the pencil and trash can icons displayed beside citations in the screen shots below.

  • Copy and Paste Form Data within or between Trees
Notice "Copy" and "Paste" links above the Form in the screen shots below.

Warning:  Even if the same facts exist in separate trees, they will have different, unique ids associated with them.  Because of this, the current script is unable to copy and paste selected facts from a citation in one tree and select them when pasting in another.

Tip: Another Firefox add-on that is very handy when copy and pasting data between trees is Tile Tabs.  I find is useful even when running with dual monitors.

  • Display Ancestry Record Ids on Screen
This Id is used by Ancestry to attach "Hints" to Member Trees.  Notice the id in the form of (9999::9999999999) somewhere near the citation in the screen shots below.

When exporting a GEDCOM from Ancestry it can be found in the _APID tags.  When uploading a GEDCOM to Ancestry, if it contains _APID tags, Ancestry will reattach the identifed record(s).  Legacy will import the _APID into the File ID field of both the Master Sources and Details, but then exports them as REFN.  They must be renamed before upload to Ancestry in order to have the records reattached.  (See GED Utils)

  1. Must not have Ancestry.com open while installing. Nice touch, I like it! Keep up the good work. Thanks for all your help on getting my sources into Ancestry.

  2. Ancestry Utils doesn't appear to work on the Facts & Events tab. It seems fine on the Source Citations tab, however, and is very useful there.

  3. You are correct. Looks like Ancestry has changed their markup some. Will try to correct and make an update available.

  4. With Ancestry Utils v1.1, on either the Facts & Events tab or the Source Citations tab, I'm getting an empty square box with no pencil or trashcan icons. I can't find any spot in that box to click on that does differently than clicking anywhere else in the evidence section.

  5. Correction: I _can_ find spots to click on to edit or delete the source citation, but it's hard to find the right spots without the icons. I don't want to risk deleting the citation!

  6. Looks like Ancestry has changed the code on both the Facts & Events tab and the Source Citations tab again, breaking the Ancestry Utils script. The Source Citation editing page appears to have changed also.

  7. Any chance of writing a script that can either filter out matches by suspected generations, and or a trash can to hide them with out having to open each and every persons "View Match"

Thanks, oh.. posted here because theres no contact info I can see on latest Ancestry post.
